McDonald's Valentine's Coupon Books

Giveaway Week!

Starting this Sunday I will host a giveaway week on my blog. This will coincide with the Bloggy Giveaways Quarterly Carnival, where there will literally be thousands of giveaways posted starting the week on the 26th. During the last giveaway carnival, I entered several blog giveaways and won an advanced reader's copy of a book and a Chex Mix spa basket.

Coupons in unexpected places

Check your magazines carefully. I recently discovered a coupon for a FREE 2 liter Diet Dr. Pepper on page 39 of the February issue of Cosmopolitan. The best thing is I requested Cosmo free from valuemags a few months ago. You can still get 1 year of Cosmo free from Mercury magazines. I've also heard that the most recent issue of Maxim has the same Diet Dr Pepper coupon.

Coupons seem to be appearing in mainstream magazines more frequently. I've also found one or two coupons in Woman's Day, Prevention and Remedy, all of which I receive for free. I enjoy reading all the free magazines I receive and now I am paying attention to the advertisements just in case there's a coupon.

Do you have a 2009 Entertainment book yet? I bought one in November and got my money back in the first month I used it. There are lots of Buy one get one free restaurant entree offers, select grocery store coupons, car rental and hotel savings, and discount coupons for local and online stores. Spend Smart Eat Smart

The University of Iowa has a new website, Spend Smart Eat Smart, that is all about eating nutritious foods and spending wisely on food.

The website has really good information on how to shop, meal plan, how to read labels, recipes and limiting waste. There are interactive quizzes and games that test your knowledge of nutrition and food costs. You can also calculate if your family is spending a reasonable amount of money on food. This is a great resource to guide you on how to shop wisely at the grocery store or reinforce what you already do.

I really learned alot from the aisle by aisle shopping that pointed out smart shopping strategies for each category of food. It was interesting to see how much fruit a dollar buys. The comparison of canned, frozen and fresh vegetables was also very interesting. I never thought to rinse and drain the canned vegetables to reduce the sodium. What a great tip!

The buffet normally costs $5.49 to $7.99 depending on when you go. Grab my new button!

I just designed my very first 125 x 125 button for my blog. I used several online tutorials, spent a few hours working on it and made it all by myself. It's not perfect, but I'm glad I finally have a button. It was actually fairly easy once I found the right resources. Get Paid to take Surveys!I earn extra 'spending' money by taking online surveys. One of my favorite survey companies is Opinion Outpost. They pay around $2-5 for every survey and most last 10-25 minutes. Since July I qualified for 12 surveys and have earned $40. I don't take every survey they offer since I don't have time, but enjoy doing them when I get a chance. I really like that they you only need to accumulate $5 in earnings to request a check and it comes fairly quickly in the mail. You won't get rich doing surveys, but it's a little extra money that you can put in your pocket or buy a few extras.

Frugal Fun on a cold snowy day

It's bitter cold here in Omaha, -2 degrees, and the kids have been stuck in the house all week with colds. Now that my oldest is better she really wants to go outside and play in some snow but I can't let her since it's so ridiculously cold and windy. So, I decided to let her play in the snow indoors.

1. Lay a plastic tablecloth down on a hard surface floor
2. Bring a tub of snow inside (You can use a large tupperware or small storage container, plastic mixing bowl or any other nonbreakable container.)
3. Add some plastic kitchen utensils and small tupperware containers
4. Enjoy!

This is such a fun activity for a snowy day without dealing with frozen little toes. Also, the tablecloth makes cleanup a breeze. The bonus is it not only occupies the kids for an hour or two, but it's free too!

Do you have a child under 5, care for someone or for yourself? You can get cash back on a large list of products from the Caregivers Marketplace. You purchase any 5 of the products listed, mail in the form with receipts and get a rebate check. You can submit this form for as many rebates this year as you want, as long as you purchase 5 of the specified products each time. For those of us with small children you get $0.75 back for every pack of Huggies, Pull ups, Swimmers or Goodnights and $1 back for Balmex. This adds up real fast if you use these products. You can also submit rebates for products for denture care, oral care, incontinence care, pain relief, vitamins and minerals, digestive health, foot care and diabetes care. The list of eligible products is 3 pages long and includes 100 of products from over 20 brands, including Nature Made, Cottonelle, Depends, Icy Hot, Gold Bond and Huggies.

The Caregivers Marketplace receives rebates from the manufacturer's of these products that are generally not covered by Medicaid or insurance and pass the savings on the us. They don't charge for this program and you do not have be a caregiver to enroll. If you purchase the products listed you are eligible to receive the rebates. This is a great way to save some extra money on products you use throughout the year.

Make your own baby food

I have a 5 month old son who is just starting out on solid foods and I don't want to buy the expensive jars of baby food. At his age, he only eats a small amount from the jar and then the rest is wasted. Yesterday, my doctor told me a great way to make and store baby food.

1. Fully cook or steam the vegetables.
2. Puree the vegetables in a blender. Remove any stringy or solid pieces. You want the food to be super smooth.
3. Pour spoonfuls into an ice cube tray. Each cube is a serving.
4. Cover tray in tin foil and freeze.

When you're ready to feed your baby just remove one of the veggie cubes from the ice cube tray and let it defrost for about an hour. Then it's ready for baby.

If you feed your baby 3 times a day, each tray makes 5 days worth of food. This is perfect if you are just starting out, because when one tray is done you can start a new vegetable. I'm excited to do this and save some money by not buying premade baby food.

My shopping trip

It looks like the stores in my area over bought for their 4th quarter because they still have tons of inventory. Here is a summary of my most recent shopping trip. I recently stopped by the local Kohl's to use my $5 coupon and found tons of clothes up to 90% off original prices. I picked up 3 shirts and only paid $4.71 after my $5 coupon!

Then I headed to the mall. JcPenney's had 40% off clearance prices and I picked up a $60 pair of Docker's pants for my husband for only $15. I also found a cute outfit for a birthday gift for my daughter's friend for less than $9 for adjustable waist jeans and a cute long sleeved shirt. They had another whole rack of long sleeve shirts and stretch pants for only $2.99 each. You can't even buy used kid's clothes that cheap at consignment sales. Next, I stopped by Bath and Body for their semi annual sale and picked up some travel size hand lotion for $1.25. I also peeked in Victoria's Secret and they had 5 racks of Christmas gift sets at 75% off. If you use their fragrances a great time to stock up.

So, I was very happy with my shopping trip. It's very obvious the retail stores are hurting and need to move merchandise right now. This is a great time for consumers if you have some extra money or need some new items. Of course, if you don't need anything it's best to hold onto your hard earned money instead of taking advantage of great deals just because it's a great deal. I needed to buy a few things and was pleasantly surprised with all the amazing sales right now.

This offer is no longer available. I came across this coupon on the web for $3 off any Splenda product. Right now Walgreens has the 100 pack Splenda or 3.8 oz granulated package on sale for $2.99, which means you get it for FREE! I add this to my coffee every day, so I was excited to come across this coupon.
Here is also a coupon for $2 off any Johnson's Baby product. If you have little ones in the house you will be able to get some bath products for cheap or free. It doesn't exclude trial sizes, so you could probably make some money with this coupon if you buy the trial size.
