CLOSED Review & Giveaway! 'Six Pixels of Separation' by Mitch Joel (5 winners)!

Six Pixels of Separation: Everyone Is Connected. Connect Your Business to Everyone by Mitch Joel, Business Plus, published September 2009.

From the publisher:
"Is it important to be connected? Well, consider this: If Facebook were a country, it would have the sixth largest population in the world.

The truth is, we no longer live in a world of six degrees of separation. In fact, we're now down to only six pixels of separation, which changes everything we know about doing business.

This is the first book to integrate digital marketing, social media, personal branding, and entrepreneurship in a clear, entertaining, and instructive manner that everyone can understand and apply.

Through the use of timely case studies and fascinating stories, SIX PIXELS OF SEPARATION offers a complete set of the latest tactics, insights, and tools that will empower you to reach a global audience and consumer base-and, best yet, you can do this pretty much for free. Digital marketing expert Mitch Joel unravels this fascinating world of new media-but does so with a brand-new perspective that is driven by compelling results. The smarter entrepreneurs and top executives are leveraging these digital channels to get their voice "out there"-connecting with others, becoming better community citizens, and, ultimately, making strategic business moves that are increasing revenue, awareness, and overall success in the marketplace-without the support of traditional mass media.

Everyone is connected. Isn't it time for you and your company to connect to everyone? SIX PIXELS OF SEPARATION will show you how."

My Review: (review copy provided by Hachette Book Group)
'Six Pixels of Separation' was a quick read with real life examples and stories to illustrate points relevant today's business world and building a brand. However, this book isn't just for business executives or CIOs, but for anyone involved in social media.

As a blogger, 'Six Pixels of Separation' really made me reevaluate my blog and find areas of improvement. I also learned about several free online tools available to analyze my site and ideas to expand my content.

'Six Pixels of Separation' demonstrates the importance of developing an online presence and motivates readers to take action today. I know I certainly have many great ideas to take my blog to the next level after reading this book. Joel also discusses building a personal brand, 'unconferences' and the future of technology.

I would highly recommend this book to any blogger, entrepreneur, business person or anyone interested in digital marketing or social media.

CLOSED Review & Giveaway! Harry Connick JR 'Your Songs' CD!

Harry Connick Jr. released a brand new album or classic songs on September 22 entitled 'Your Songs'. This CD is an amazing compilation of songs by some of the greatest musicians of all time with a full jazz band and string orchestra. Of course, the best part is the sultry sound of Harry Connick Jr's voice.

As I listened to the album, I felt relaxed and even sang along to a few of them. I've never really listened to Harry Connick, Jr. before, but now I am hooked. This CD is absolutely wonderful. Listen to a preview of the songs on the widget below and you'll see what I mean.

Besame Mucho
The Way You Look Tonight

Juice Box Jungle - Check it out!

Check out the new JuiceBoxJungle widget on my right sidebar and click if you've ever feathered your hair, Farrah style. It only takes a second. Click to vote and to find out how many of your Facebook friends have also feathered in the past. I have hopelessly flat hair, so the feathered hair style just didn't work for me.

JuiceBoxJungle also has a new, short 2 1/2 minute video about the 1950's playpen. The debate is whether playpens are okay or are they sending our kid's on a track to therapy. You've got to see this video to see some of the strong reactions to the playpen debate.

I personally used the playpen outside when my son was a baby so my older daughter could run around and play. Although, the most frequent use was as a portable crib when we traveled. After you watch the video, what are your thoughts on the playpen: okay to use or not?

I got my $50 in gift cards from Nicole's Savings Advantage!

Offer no longer available. I received my 2 - $25 gift cards for trying Nicole's Savings Advantage. After the 30 day trial period, I received a postcard to select which gift cards I wanted and to confirm my address. The website says you will get a $25 Target and a $25 Starbucks card, but you will get to choose from several stores. (My 3 year old is holding my Walmart and Starbucks gift cards in the picture.) You do have to be a member for at least one month after the trial period to be eligible for these gift cards.

After the $2.95 - 30 day trial, I paid the first month's full price fee of $9.95 to be able to receive this offer. The two gift cards came in the mail a week before I would be charged for another month. So a total of $13.90 for $50 in gift cards. A great deal! Plus, Nicole's Savings Advantage has lots of discounts and savings for online shopping, which is great for the upcoming holiday season. It's a win-win offer.

MySavings Media Super Affiliate Program

A year of blogging

Today is my one year anniversary of my blog. I started this blog, thanks to Freebies 4 mom's weekly feature, Money 4 Mom. She discussed how to start a blog and earn money. I was immediately intrigued by the idea of making extra money for my family since I am a stay at home mom. When I found out a blog is free to start I decided to give it a try since I had nothing to lose.

What I have learned in a year of blogging:
1. I love blogging! It's my passion to share good deals with others and I enjoy helping others save money. I am passionate about providing great, useful content and offering valuable and fun giveaways.

2. I'm not in it for the money. Yes, I do make some money from this blog, but I'm not going to get rich anytime soon. The income basically supports my other hobbies, like reading and scrapbooking.

3. The free products are great. I am excited to be selected to try new products for my blog and often host giveaways for my readers. I've received free books, toys, laundry detergent, dairy coupons, cookbooks, CD's and kid's products to review and/or giveaway on my blog. However, I am very picky about what I promote and only select offers that I would truly enjoy reviewing and would be useful to my readers.

4. Blogs are wonderful resources. I've discovered so many talented writers and bloggers and really enjoy reading their blogs on a daily basis. Often I find myself getting lost in the blog world clicking on blogs in blogrolls, entering blog giveaways and reading content. Through blogs, I've been able to really embrace the frugal lifestyle and find great deals to share with you.

To my readers: I feel humbled by all the subscribers that read this blog on a regular basis. After a year of blogging, I have over 1,000 combined email subscribers and followers and I truly appreciate that you take the time to read my blog. Thanks for joining me on this journey and I look forward to another year of blogging.

Review & Giveaway! 'In CHEAP We Trust' by Lauren Weber (5 copies)!

In CHEAP We Trust: The Story of a Misunderstood American Virtue by Lauren Weber, Little Brown and Co, published September 7, 2009.

Review From the Publisher:

Cheap suit. Cheap date. Cheap shot. It’s a dirty word, an epithet laden with negative meanings. It’s also the story of Lauren Weber’s life. As a child, she resented her father for setting the thermostat at 50 degrees through the frigid New England winters and rarely using his car’s turn signals—to keep them from burning out. But as an adult, when she found herself walking 30 blocks to save $2 on subway fare, she realized she had turned into him. Should she be horrified… or proud?

In hard times, questions about Americans’ conflicted relationship with consumption and frugality become more urgent and provocative. Why do we ridicule people who save money? Where’s the boundary between thrift and miserliness? Is thrift a virtue or a vice during a recession? And was it common sense or obsessive-compulsive disorder that made her father ration the family’s toilet paper?

In answering these questions, In Cheap We Trust offers a colorful ride through the history of frugality in the United States. Readers will learn the stories behind Ben Franklin and his famous maxims, Hetty Green (named “the world’s greatest miser” by the Guinness Book of Records) and the stereotyping of Jewish and Chinese immigrants as cheap.

Lauren also explores contemporary expressions and dilemmas of thrift. From Dumpster-diving to economist John Maynard Keynes’s “Paradox of Thrift” to today’s recession-driven enthusiasm for frugal living, In Cheap We Trust teases out the meanings of cheapness and examines the wisdom and pleasures of not spending every last penny.

My Review:

In CHEAP We Trust is an interesting historical journey of American frugality. The first five chapters were loaded with historical facts, figures and wartime economics. History is not my favorite subject, but the frugal focus was really unique and fascinating.

The last four chapters focused on more modern frugality, cheapskate psychology and modern economics. Weber introduced freegans, who dumpster dive, grow urban gardens and squat in unoccupied buildings. At first, I was disgusted by the thought of dumpster diving, but reading this book, I was more appalled by the sheer amount of edible food that is wasted each day.

Overall, this book allowed me to embrace my own frugal upbringings. Weber's own life and frugal father reminded me of my dad. Although my dad never rationed toilet paper, he did make us eat the same cheap bean soups until they were completely gone, sometimes for up to four days in a row. He once decided to make a cheap whirlpool using an old horse trough, plastic piping and a small engine.

I could continue for pages with stories about my dad's frugality, but am very grateful for those experiences that have made me who I am today. Weber's In CHEAP We Trust really reminded me that frugality is financially and ecologically smart and should be celebrated and encouraged in America today. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in American history and/or frugality.
