It's the time of year for blog conferences and I hate to admit I've never been able to attend one. Since I've had three babies in the last six years I've been a little busy.

However, before kids, I was very active in a direct sales company and attended three national conferences. At every one, I always made sure I had up-to-date professional looking business cards. I quit shortly after my second son was born, but I learned valuable lessons about networking.

There are networking opportunities everywhere. I always have business cards stored in my wallet, coupon binder and purse, so I'm never without a business card at any time. I can't tell you how many times I've been stopped at a store while shopping and asked about my coupon binder. It's a perfect time to hand out cards and introduce them to my money saving site and coupon classes. My business card is the first impression someone has about my website. It was a desperation that wrought the downfall of the Hathaways—and the once-prosperous farm.

Now the last inhabitant of the decaying old home has died—alone. None of the surviving members of the Hathaway family want anything to do with the farm, the land or the memories.

Especially Meredith Pincetti. Now living in New York City, for seventeen years Lavinia's youngest grandchild has tried to forget everything about her family and her past. But with the receipt of a pleading letter, Meredith is again thrust into conflict with the legacy that destroyed her family's once-great name.

Back at Aurelia, Meredith must confront the rise and fall of the Hathaway family…and her own part in their mottled history.

My Review:
This novel was very dark and twisted with family secrets. The characters were well developed and complex, but their stories were somewhat disjointed. The novel switched from present to past frequently and I sometimes had to reread portions to determine whose story was being told at the time.

The character's stories were interesting to read, but they could be hard to keep straight at times. There were alot of players in this novel and their stories were intertwined. There was great pain and suffering throughout the novel and parts were very sad. Truly a story of secrets and how circumstances shape who you become. There was no huge climax for me, because by the middle of the book, I figured out what the big family secret was.

Overall, it was well written (more literary than most contemporary novels) and the character development was top notch, but I was not overly impressed with the storyline. For me, this book was just okay, but still worth the read if you appreciate delving into a family's story of dark secrets and tragedy.

Getting Rid of the Clutter - My New Mission

After reading The Money Saving Mom's Budget book (clutter negatively impacts your finances) and watching a few episodes of Hoarders, I knew the time had come for me to de-clutter. To visitors, my house appears clean and picked up (at least as much as it can be three kids under 6), but the drawers and all the storage areas are overflowing with stuff. As many couponers, I went through a phase of collecting free and really cheap things from the stores, even though I didn't know if I would ever use it. I would throw the purchases in the back of a cupboard or drawer and forget about them. Now, I only buy products I use or immediately add them to my donation pile.

The time has come for me to seriously analyze our stuff and get rid of what we cannot or won't use anymore. I'm tired of the clutter and the 'piles'. Yes, I admit I have a pile problem. I have piles of papers, magazines, coupons, books, notebooks, etc, in several places throughout my house. Although, it looks messy, I know exactly what's in each of my piles. I know it's a little strange, but it works, until I get sick of looking at the piles, like today. The piles just have to go.

I am systematically attacking each area of my house whenever I have 30 minutes to an hour to spare. I have three piles: trash, keep and garage sale. As I examine each item, it immediately goes in the garage sale pile if it has not been used in the last six months (unless there's sentimental value). I'm amazing myself with all the clutter I am clearing out of our living space. I can't believe we had so much stuff hidden away and how much more spacious our house is becoming. I am also keeping a list of what I throw out and want to get to fifty things.

Here's what I've thrown away so far:
- clothes, kid's and adults
- two broken dressers
- DVDS, CDs
- books and magazines
- couch pillows
- kitchen utensils, hot pads, trivets
- reusable bags, plastic sacks and jars (no idea why I saved all this stuff, but I did)
- kid's toys and games
- sheets
- an old telephone (had a wire and all)
- table runners and table cloth
- shower curtain
- pens, pencils and notebooks
- candles and candle holder
- old television
- makeup

Getting rid of the clutter is extremely liberating. I feel so refreshed after going through a drawer or closet and opening up a space previously full of stuff. I also found items that I had forgotten and am happy to discover them again. I know I still have alot of work ahead of me, but I am ready to be finally rid of the clutter and stuff.

Do you need to declutter? Any tips for getting rid of the clutter? Believe me, I need all the help and tips I can get.

I have been a follower of Crystal's blog, Money Saving Mom, for several years now and was really excited to read her first published book. I love her no-nonsense approach to money and home management. She advocates the cash only budget, eliminating credit cards and living within your means.

One concept that really resonated with me is clearing clutter and chaos from my life to achieve financial success. I never thought of clutter having an impact on finances, but her arguments make sense. It's a great motivator to get rid of the paper piles (I have many of these) and clear out the clutter to stay on track financially.

Crystal also discusses basic and advance coupons and ideas to lower your grocery bill without coupons. The back of the book is filled with worksheets to coincide with the concepts in the book. Overall, this book was simple concepts, but very well written and a powerful reminder to live frugally and achieve financial success for your family.

I would highly recommend this book to everyone looking for ways to decrease spending, pay down debt or just get more organized with your finances. Even if you only take away a few concepts from 'The Money Saving Mom's Budget', you will save way more than what you pay for this book. A solid investment in your financial future.

I am really impressed that Crystal is donating all her proceeds from this book to Compassion International, a Christian child advocacy organization.

I made a trip to my Target today and scored at their 70% off toy clearance. I purchased nine items for only $67.93. The retail value is $217.21 (a 69% or $150 savings)! I was really excited about the giant Pirates of the Carribean ships that retail for $49.99 and were marked down to $14.98. Total score! I now have two of my children's birthday shopping done and a few gifts for some upcoming birthday parties.

If you want to get some clearance toys, hurry to Target, because these always go really fast. I also stopped at CVS and found a few toys marked down to 75% off. I got a Wuggle Pet and a Thomas Train Starter Kit for $5 each.

The True Story of Puss in Boots

The True Story of Puss'N Boots from Phase 4 Films released October 4, 2011.

I should have previewed this movie before letting my three and five year old watch it. They seemed to enjoy it, but I found the content too heavy and inappropriate for them. Puss'N Boots is played by William Shatner, a very annoying cat voice. I like his regular voice and was seriously disappointed with his character voice.

The princess character had over-exaggerated curves and features and was overly sexual. Her parents, the king and queen were obviously alcoholics. The queen slurred all her words and the king could hardly keep his eyes open. The court jester scared my three year old. He had a freaky clown looking face and was up to no good.

I did enjoy the music. The princess' voice was very beautiful and the music catchy. That was the only redeeming feature of this movie. Supposedly, it also follows the original story of Puss'N Boots.

I would not recommend this movie for your family. It retails for $19.99 for the DVD and $24.99 for the Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack. Save your money and rent it if you really want to check it out for yourself.
